Some top quality squash on display at the West championships this weekend. Peter O’Hara once more holds the West Closed Champion shield that has his name plastered all over it.
Barry Sutherland, back on these shores for a few weeks, showed the shotmaking and retrieval for which he is renowned but was unable to deter Peter’s charge for another title. Peter raced to a 1-0 lead, but Barry fought back to take the second, cleverly controlling the pace of the game and forcing a few errors. Peter came from behind to win a tight third with some trademark nicks, and carried this momentum into the fourth to seal the win.
In the A Plate final, Graham McAinsh of Giffnock led 2-0 before Andy McCully of Townend staged a fightback to 2 games all. Graham steadied the ship in the decider to win through.
In the B Event, young Ross Andrew of Newlands prevailed in a ding dong match over Norman Paterson of Wishaw, last year’s B champ, with a strong steady display of clean hitting and soaking up of pressure. (3-2 to Ross). The B plate was won by John Devitt of Hamilton, beating Steve Carlin in another tight final.
Paul Geri of Giffnock won the C event with some solid performances in the round robin, beating Paul Paton 3-0 of SSRC in the deciding match.
Big thanks to SSRC, the refs (especially final day stalwart Billy Stevely), and all who took part this weekend.
